Why Website Speed Matters for Sri Lankan Businesses (and How to Fix It)

A slow website costs you customers. Learn why page speed is critical for Sri Lankan businesses, how to test your site, and what to do if it is too slow.

In Sri Lanka, where mobile internet connections can vary significantly depending on the network and location, website speed is not just a technical metric — it directly affects how many customers you retain and how well you rank on Google.

How Slow is Too Slow?

Google research shows that 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. On a 4G connection, most pages should load in under 2 seconds. On a slower 3G connection — still common in many parts of Sri Lanka — even 3 seconds can feel sluggish.

If your website takes 5–8 seconds to load, you are losing more than half your visitors before they even see your content.

Why Speed Affects Google Rankings

Since 2021, Google has included Core Web Vitals as a direct ranking factor. These are:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — How long until the main content loads. Should be under 2.5 seconds.
  • FID / INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — How quickly the page responds to a click or tap. Should be under 200ms.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — How much the page layout jumps around during load. Should be under 0.1.

Websites that fail these thresholds rank lower than faster competitors — even if their content is better.

How to Test Your Website Speed

Two free tools give you an instant speed report:

  • pagespeed.web.dev (Google) — Tests both mobile and desktop. Score of 90+ is good; below 50 is a problem.
  • gtmetrix.com — More detailed breakdown of what's slowing you down.

Common Causes of Slow Websites in Sri Lanka

1. Hosting on a Shared Server

Budget shared hosting plans (especially local Sri Lankan providers) often have slow servers and limited resources. Upgrading to a modern cloud platform like Vercel, Netlify, or AWS significantly improves speed — often at similar or lower cost.

2. Unoptimised Images

A single large photo can be 3–5 MB, which takes several seconds to load on mobile. Every image should be compressed and served in modern formats like WebP. TanDigitals handles this automatically in every build.

3. Too Many Plugins or Scripts

WordPress sites with 20+ plugins, or websites loading a dozen third-party scripts (chatbots, analytics, social buttons), take much longer to load. Every script added to a page has a cost.

4. No Caching

Without caching, your server generates the full page from scratch on every visit. A caching layer (or a modern framework like Next.js with static generation) serves pages almost instantly.

5. Outdated Technology

Websites built on older platforms or themes often aren't optimised for modern performance standards. A rebuild using current technology typically improves scores dramatically.

What a Fast Website Looks Like

TanDigitals builds every website using Next.js — a modern framework that generates static pages, automatically optimises images, and serves content from Vercel's global CDN. Our websites consistently score 90+ on Google PageSpeed Insights.
